The league was formed back in the 1920s and was known as American Football Association. It consisted of only eleven teams. However, in 1922, the name was changed by the league to National Football League even though the association carried out the same functions and had the same mandate. Over time, new teams joined the association and today, the league has 32 teams from all over the United States. The NFL is categorized as a nonprofit organization.
In each season, a 17 week schedule is prepared during which each participant in the league is given a chance to play 16 games and a one bye week. The season starts in the first week of September and runs every week up to late December, although in some cases it can run up to the beginning of January. At the end of the season, six selected teams are required to play in the playoffs in a single twelve team elimination tournament that leads to the Super Bowl tournament, which is the final championship game. This final game is always played at a pre-determined stadium that is normally in the city that plays host to the NFL team.
